How to Tell The Difference Between a Psychic Thought From a Non-Psychic Thought

hopeful harvestPerhaps one of the most common questions that I am asked about psychic development is: “How do I tell the difference between true psychic impressions and insights and my own thoughts and hopeful wishes?”

This question may be the key to psychic development in a nutshell. Okay, there is a little more to it than this. However, being able to discern when you are intuiting and when you are receiving information through your thinking, finite self is a giant step in the right direction. Most psychic information comes through the same channels as non-psychic information. We intuit through our thoughts or mental intuition; through our emotions or emotional intuition; through our body or physical intuition; and through our dreams, imagination, and images or spiritual intuition.

Although it often goes by unnoticed, we tend to receive both psychic and self-generated information throughout the day. The differences between the two are often subtle and barely discernible. However, with a little practice you will begin to better identify, recognize, and be more receptive to psychic energy information.

Thought energy is the primary psychic current of mental intuition. Two of the most common psychic abilities of mental intuition are claircognizance and clairaudience. Simply knowing or becoming aware of something, without knowing how you know it, is called claircogniaznce. Clairaudience is the ability to receive energy information through an inner voice or through inner hearing and it often works in tandem with claircognizance.

Telltale Signs of Psychic Information
Although it may be subtle and at times hard to discern, there is a difference between the quality and tone of psychic thought and of self-generated thoughts. Here are a few telltale signs to help you to better identify which is which.

Non-psychic, self-generated thoughts originate in the ego and thinking mind and are driven primarily through desires, emotions, expectations, memories, our knowledge base, biases, past experiences, and beliefs. They are often linear in that one thought leads to another and another, and so one. They often arouse emotions and reinforce what we already know and believe or expect to be true. Rarely does a self-generated thought surprise us with its originality or new information.

Psychic thoughts are free of ego influences. For this reason they may seem flat, unemotional, and impersonal. Because psychic thoughts do not arouse our emotions and speak to our desires and expectations, they rarely get our attention. However, there is usually a calm awareness that accompanies them that can feel reassuring. Unlike self-generated thoughts that tend to flow into our awareness one after another and may seem scattered and unfocused, psychic thoughts are repetitive, persistent, even-toned, and unalarming. Even in situations where you might have an emotional reaction, they tend to be understated, simple, and matter of fact.

For instance, imagine one morning as you are getting ready for work the thought comes to you to call an old friend that you haven’t seen in a little while. You don’t pay it too much attention. However, as you sit behind your desk at work a few hours later, the thought to call this same friend again surfaces. You wonder what she is up to and decide to give her a call on the weekend. Later that evening at home the thought to call her surfaces again. This time you pick up the phone and make the call. She immediately answers and tells you that she had been thinking of you. As you catch up with one another, she mentions that there is an opening in the company where she works that you might be interested in. The position is aligned with your career goals and she remembers in the past you expressing interest in moving to her area. Later that evening you look up the job description and realize that this sounds like your dream job. Hopeful and excited you apply.

Looking back you realize that the message to call your friend fit the criteria of a psychic thought. It was persistent and matter of fact and it didn’t offer any explanation as it why to call her or fill you with expectations. It was a simple repetitive statement that would’ve been easy to disregard and ignore.

Psychic Thought Exercise
When you become more aware and mindful of your thoughts as they spontaneously surface, your ability to quickly recognize psychic information as it flows in will increase. Confidence in your innate abilities will grow and you will be empowered to further develop and use your psychic skills.

Here is a simple exercise that will help you to better discern psychic thoughts from self-generated thoughts and receive insight and guidance into a question or concern.

To begin, think of a question or area in your life that you would like to receive energy information about. Write it down. Then write down whatever hopes, concerns, fears, potential outcomes, expectations, and anything else that comes to mind in relation to your question.

You may want to skip this step, but please don’t. Success depends on clearing out as much of the self-generated and ego-based feedback and responses to your concern as possible. Writing this down gets it out of your way and allows you to be more intuitively clear and receptive. Our beliefs, desires, expectations, and other thoughts and feelings act as intuitive static. When we get our personal biases out of our head and down on paper or computer, it has less power to influence intuitive receptivity and cause confusion.

Once you feel more neutral and ready to intuit, get comfortable and begin to breathe relaxing breaths. Inhale deeply, then exhale any stress or tension. Inwardly say your question or concern as you continue to breathe. You may want to repeat your question as you continue to relax. Pay attention to any thoughts that surface. Remember, psychic thoughts are simple, concise statements. They do not arouse emotions or give explanations and details. Repetitive and matter of fact, they often seem insignificant.

When you feel that you have received a psychic thought, write it down and go back to the breath and become receptive.

Be aware that once we receive a psychic thought our tendency is to try to make sense of it and understand its meaning through the finite thinking mind. Resist the temptation to overthink and engage your rational thought process.

Letting go of psychic thoughts as they surface may seem counter to the point of receiving helpful psychic information. We are, after all, developing this ability to understand and use the insights and guidance we receive. However, correctly identifying a psychic thought, but mistakenly assuming we know what it means, is a common error. It is better to slow down the process and continue to let it unfold while still in an intuitive receptive state.

Keep writing down your psychic thoughts as they surface, then go back to focusing on the breath and become receptive. Once you feel as if you have intuitively received all that you can, read over the psychic thoughts that you wrote down. Pay attention to any intuitive insights or “a-ha” realizations or awareness that surfaces as you contemplate what you received. Give the psychic thoughts space and time to evolve and reveal more insights and information.

How to Work with Psychic Thoughts
Unlike an intuited image or symbol, some psychic thoughts are straight to the point and don’t need further interpretation. However, this does not necessarily mean that you understand its significance. In the example of the psychic thought to call your friend, you may have been able to identity this as a psychic thought, but still didn’t know why it was important to call her.

At times psychic thoughts are not straight-forward and may continue to baffle you. This doesn’t mean that your psychic skills are lacking. When intuitive guidance comes from a higher divine source, the mental thinking part of us cannot always grasp and make sense of it. If this happens, know that this is often a sign of a true psychic thought. Meditate on the thought and resist trying to rationally understand it. In time its message will become more obvious.

You might also find that this exercise doesn’t always work. After going through the steps, you may still not be sure if a thought is psychic or self-generated. Keep practicing the exercise and noticing the qualities of psychic thoughts. The more important or dear to our heart a question, concern, or issue may be, the easier it is for the mind to interfere and sabotage the process. When this happens, don’t worry. Once you ask the question and become receptive and set the intent to receive psychic information, you will. The energy information may not come when you want it to and you may want to discount what you intuit, but you will receive a response. Quite often this happens when we are no longer thinking about our concern and doing something relaxing. This can happen while driving a car, washing dishes, taking a walk, or during any activity that quiets the thinking mind. A psychic thought will slip in when given a chance.

Do You Feel Others Emotions?

mewebThose with a high degree of emotional intuition, often share common characteristics. Most are highly sensitive and empathetic, especially with those who are in pain or suffering in some way. With a desire to support, help and be of service to others, they may believe that love can heal all. It is not surprising that those with a high degree of emotional intuition also tend to be emotionally intelligent. Common traits of emotional intelligence include such thing as the ability to be aware of, communicate, and express emotions, as well as the ability to skillfully help others to process their emotions. An emotional intuitive may not only feel another’s emotions, they are also able to lighten another’s emotional stress and worries through a kind of emotional psychic intervention. They often do this unknowingly by sending pure waves of unconditional healing love energy to those who they intuit are in need.

Because an emotional intuitive is naturally attuned to others emotional energy, they may find that they are continually in or getting out of, intense emotional relationships. Those with a high degree of emotional intuition may also have a longing to experience perfect love through union with another or through experiencing an inner state of mystical divine love.

The raw openness through which those with a high degree of emotional intuition intuit, can leave them feeling vulnerable and overly sensitive. Stressful environments, disagreements, witnessing another’s suffering or being in the midst of angry or unhappy people, can leave them feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Many emotional intuitives have no inner shield or protective boundary and unknowingly feel and intuit both positive and toxic emotional energy, often to their determent.

Due to the magnitude and volume of emotions that an emotional intuitive absorbs and feels, many suffer from free floating stress and anxiety. Because of this, some withdraw from social interactions or situations in an attempt to avoid emotional overload. However because they are intuitively connected to emotional energy, this is rarely effective. Even when sitting alone in a room, they can still absorb the emotional energy of others or situations. Some emotional intuitives unconsciously harden their hearts in an attempt to protect themselves or intuitively try to shut off their emotional receptivity. When the pain, grief and stress of others and the world becomes too much to bear, they attempt to shield themselves by withdrawing and closing their heart. However this is not an effective solution and often creates a sense of inner emptiness and unhealthy detachment.  An emotional intuitive needs the vibrations of love almost as much as they need oxygen to survive. When they close their heart, they can no longer feel and benefit from the rich waves of pure love that flow through them.

While some emotional intuitives, shut down, there are others who reside at the other end of the spectrum. They are almost addicted to the ups and downs of emotional energy and crave emotionally charged interactions. These emotional intuitives often have a fair amount of drama in their lives. Their relationships may be marked by the extremes of love, hate, jealousy, passion and other intense emotional states.

Emotional energy can be seductive and powerful. For some, it is almost like a drug that they feel they need in order to feel alive and full of energy. Without powerful emotional experiences they can become depressed, tired and anxious. Yet, the constant craving for emotional intensity can eventually lead to emotional burn-out and even physical illness.

If you have a high degree of emotional intuition it is essential that you open and connect to the higher vibrations of love. We all need love. If you primarily intuit through emotional energy, the need is even greater. The higher vibrations of unconditional and divine love restores and creates balance and harmony. It strengthens and protects you from the potential debilitating effects of toxic and caustic emotional energy. It helps to soothe the effects of emotional sensitivity and enables you intuit other’s emotions without absorbing them. Love opens the door and empowers you to embrace your intuitive gifts and use them in life enhancing ways.

Intuiting Solo

??????????????????????????????? Have you had moments of crystal clear intuitive awareness? Do you sometimes feel that there is an inner presence that is leading and guiding you and acting in your best interest? Have you ever felt a shiver of excitement move through you when a spontaneous intuitive insight is proven true and correct? These are a just a few of the natural intuitive occurrences that motivate many to further develop their intuitive awareness.
One of the great gifts of intuition is that it enables us to feel closer to others. When you feel what another feels, tune into another’s thoughts or experience their aches and pains in your body, you become aware of your innate connection to others. In a similar way feeling the presence of a loved one on the other side or experiencing the intervention of an angel or spirit guide, assures you that there is life beyond the physical and it is loving wise and comforting.
The paradox of developing intuition is that although it provides us with a unique connection to others, we often develop it in isolation. If you are not fortunate enough to have supportive and interested family and friends or live in an area where you have access to intuitive development classes and group psi activities you likely are developing your intuition on your own. Although intuitive awareness opens new doors of possibilities and connection to all of life, it is initially a process of looking deeper within self. I write books about intuitive and medium development to give others the tools that I have learned and to help bridge the gap of loneliness that can accompany intuitive development. Still even though books serve an important role, practicing, developing and interpreting intuitive insights requires direct experience. Having another or a group to discuss and practice with is helpful. Yet, there can be hidden benefits to developing intuition, psychic and medium abilities on your own.
Spiritual Calling
Without the benefit of a class and teacher to lead you through intuitive exercises and help you to interpret what you receive, you may feel alone in a sea of chaotic intuitive phenomenon. But, you are not as alone as you may believe. You are being guided and supported by loving and wise spiritual guides and angels. When spirit comes knocking on your door with intuitive gifts, know that you are being called into a closer connection with the spirit realm.
Here are some suggestions for solo intuitive development.
• Trust yourself and release your fear of the unknown. The unseen is safe, reliable and is inherently positive and life-giving. Trust that you can communicate and receive its direction and blessing. The universe will respond to your intent to develop your intuition. Notice the magic all around you. The intangible is not as elusive as what it may seem. It will guide you, respond and support your efforts. There are many ways that the unseen communicates with you. Trust it when it does.
• Ask your angels and spirit guides for signs and synchroncities that will confirm when you are on the right track. Then trust what happens. The spirit realm communicates in unlimited ways.
For instance: Has a bird ever seemed to perch on your window sill soon after questioning an intuitive insight and it seemed to be more than a coincidence? Have you ever found coins or feathers, noticed repeating numbers or heard a meaningful verse of a song that seemed to give you a message. These and other similar synchronicities are common signs that you are in the flow of a greater knowing and awareness.
• Take time every day to listen. Relish the quiet and practice sitting silently in meditation. Take time to be in nature, live in the now and listen to the quiet inner voice.
• Find creative ways in your everyday life to take advantage of simple intuitive opportunities. For example: hold mail in your hands or intuitively focus on an email before you open it. Pay attention to any thoughts, emotions, words, numbers or awareness and knowing that surface.
• Notice the energy glow around others or surrounding events. Pay attention to whom or what feels energetically stronger or more compelling. In time you will find that those that seem to glow are often lucky, win, and have good health and generally experience events and situations that work to their benefit.
• Write down your dreams. Even if it seems that they are silly and make no sense, in time patterns and intuitive insights will emerge from them.
• Look at the circumstances of your life symbolically. Use your intuition to see the deeper message within the events, people, circumstances, relationships and conditions of your life. Approach all that you experience as an interactive dialogue between yourself and the universe. What is life attempting to teach you? Where are you experiencing discomfort, frustration or lack? Notice how changes in your thoughts, emotions and actions affect your outer and external experiences. Listen within for insight into the meaning and significance behind your day-to-day experiences.
Developing your intuitive abilities on your own can accelerate your spiritual-intuitive growth and strengthen your connection with the unseen. If you feel you have no support or that your friends and family do not understand your interest in psychic and intuitive awareness, know that you are strong enough to go it alone. There is an invisible presence that assists and guides you. As the Buddha said, Be a light unto yourself.

But, I Want To Go This Way….

I recently had an ahha moment where I was reminded that my intuition is not always so interested in leading me in the direction that I want to go. Seems obvious enough, but it took me awhile to realize that many of the times when I thought that I had misinterpreted or was confused by my intuitive signals, I was in fact, reading them correctly.

I used to feel that my intuition had failed me (or I had failed it) if I felt intuitively led into situations and experiences where I was challenged and tested. Now I have come to understand that my intuition was not faulty, it just had a different agenda.  I had places to grow and issues and pain to confront and all along my intuition has known this.

There is always another step, another level of growth and a layer to peel away. Our intuition is as focused on helping us to heal as it is in leading us into the easy and blissful.

Your intuition is connected to the deeper part of you.  Sometimes I fall into the trap of wanting my intuition to work for me to further my aims and desires. I forget that I have not always been the best judge of what makes me happy.  I am forever grateful that my intuition feeds my soul and responds to my spirit and not my overly human self that wants what it wants

A client of mine recently posted this on my Facebook page.

She wrote:

“Was driving home from school yesterday and turned onto a road even though something told me not to–as soon as I made the turn a voice in my head said, “I TOLD you not to go this way, but if you insist, then SLOW DOWN.” And I did and narrowly missed a car that pulled out in front of me–by inches. Thought of what you would say! 🙂

Thankfully she listened and avoided a possible collision. Beyond the life-saving effects of her intuitive knowing, it is a good metaphor for how our intuition often points us in the opposite direction of where we want to go.

Intuition is an invaluable ally. It will alert you to danger, provide you with insight into others and yourself, send you messages as to how to take care of your health and overall well-being.  It will also lead you into situations and experiences that you might not normally consciously choose.

Intuition leads us into a deeper mystery. Don’t try to overthink it or question if it is keeping you on track with your goals and desires. In every moment there is an opportunity to intuitively receive and be lead into what you most need mind, body and spirit. This is the genius and magic of your intuition.
